Modern Bridal Lehenga Trends: What Melbourne Brides Are Loving
Discover the bridal lehenga colours, embroidery, blouse styles and dupatta looks Melbourne brides are loving, with practical tips for choosing a style that feels right for you.

Choosing a bridal lehenga sounds easy until you actually start looking.
You might begin with a very clear idea — maybe you have always wanted a traditional red lehenga — and then suddenly you're looking at pastels, wine colours, different embroidery, different blouse styles and wondering which one actually suits you.
We see this all the time with brides visiting our boutique in Epping.
The good thing about bridal fashion today is that there really isn't one look every bride has to follow. Traditional styles are still very much there, but brides are also becoming more confident about choosing colours and designs that suit their own personality.
Here are some of the bridal lehenga trends we're seeing at the moment.
Red Is Still Special
No matter how much bridal fashion changes, red is still red.
For many Indian and Punjabi brides, there is something special about seeing yourself in a red bridal lehenga for the first time. It instantly feels bridal.
But red doesn't necessarily mean the same bright shade we have traditionally seen.
Deeper reds, maroon, wine and rich crimson shades are becoming very popular. They still give you that traditional bridal feeling but can look a little different and more modern.
Paired with beautiful gold embroidery and detailed handwork, these deeper colours can look stunning.
And if you have always dreamed of wearing red, don't change your mind just because Instagram is showing you pastels. Trends come and go. Choose what feels right when you put it on.
Pastels Are Still Going Strong
Pastel bridal lehengas aren't disappearing anytime soon.
Soft pink, blush, peach, champagne, ivory and light gold are beautiful choices, especially for daytime weddings.
They can also work really well for Melbourne weddings where couples are choosing gardens, wineries and lighter modern venues instead of only traditional reception settings.
Pastels give you a softer bridal look and leave plenty of room to play with your jewellery, flowers and makeup.
But this is one of those colours you really should try on.
A shade that looks amazing in a photo can look completely different once you're wearing it.
Brides Are Trying More Colours
One thing we've noticed is that brides are becoming much more open to colour.
Emerald green, burgundy, plum, royal blue and other deeper shades can look incredible, particularly for evening functions.
You also don't necessarily have to wear your biggest bridal outfit for only the wedding ceremony.
Some brides choose a more traditional look for the wedding and then go completely different for the reception.
That's the fun part. Your wedding events don't all have to look the same.
It's Not Always About the Heaviest Lehenga
There was a time when a bridal lehenga almost had to be extremely heavy to feel bridal.
That's changing.
Brides are paying much more attention to the actual detail — the embroidery, borders, blouse, fabric and how everything comes together.
Beautiful threadwork, zari, sequins, beads or stonework can make an outfit look luxurious without making it unnecessarily heavy.
Remember, you're going to be wearing your lehenga for hours.
You'll be walking, sitting, taking photos, greeting guests and hopefully dancing at some point too.
Looking beautiful matters, but being comfortable matters as well.
Blouses Are Getting More Attention
Sometimes it's actually the blouse that changes the whole outfit.
Different necklines, sleeves, detailed backs and fitted styles can take a fairly traditional lehenga and make it look much more modern.
This is another reason we always prefer brides to try different options rather than deciding only from photos.
The blouse you saved on Instagram might look completely different once you put it on. Another style you hadn't even considered might suit you perfectly.
Keep an open mind when you're trying things.
Don't Forget About the Dupatta
The dupatta can completely change your bridal look.
Some brides love the traditional dupatta over the head. Others prefer a lighter single drape, while some want the full double-dupatta bridal look.
There isn't a right or wrong choice.
When you're trying your lehenga, try the dupatta properly as well. Don't just look at the skirt and blouse in the mirror.
You want to see the complete look.
Don't Let Instagram Choose Your Lehenga
Instagram and Pinterest are brilliant for getting ideas.
The problem starts when you feel like your wedding outfit has to look exactly like something you've saved.
Every bride is different.
Your height, skin tone, body shape, jewellery, wedding venue and even the time of your ceremony can change how an outfit looks.
Use social media for inspiration, but don't be afraid to choose something completely different once you start trying lehengas.
We often see brides walk into the boutique asking for one particular colour and walk out loving something they never expected to choose.
That's completely normal.
Take Your Time Choosing Your Bridal Lehenga
Your bridal lehenga is probably one of the most important outfits you'll ever buy, so don't rush it.
Try different colours. Try different styles. Walk around in them. Sit down. Look at yourself from different angles.
Most importantly, notice how you feel in the outfit.
At Raunak Boutique in Epping, we have brides visiting us from across Melbourne looking for their wedding outfits. We love helping them try different styles and work out what actually suits them rather than simply telling them what's trending.
